| Microsoft cracks downs on SME illegal software use |
| Microsoft has revealed that it is attempting to stamp out the illegal use of its software by small to medium sized businesses (SMEs). The firm has asked companies which have less than 250 computers to complete a questionnaire regarding their software use, according to a report from ComputerWeekly. The survey aims to find out which outfits are running unlicensed versions of Microsoft's software. Failing to reply to the questionnaire will not help an SME's cause either, as Ram Dhaliwal, Microsoft's licensing programme manager, explains. "If they have not returned the questionnaire and have refused to engage with us, the Business Software Alliance (BSA) will be contacted," he said. The BSA can enforce fines against any company discovered to be illegally running software. "Our goal is to get customers to pay for what they use. If a customer is using our software, we ask them to pay for it," Mr Dhaliwal continued. The news follows the launch of Microsoft's new Vista software package on Monday.  © Adfero Ltd |
