Working from home can reduce the effect businesses have on the environment, according to experts on smarter working practices.

David Lennan, chairman of the Work Wise UK Summit, which this week looked into the environmental impacts of work, said that there a number of ways organisations can move towards greener working.

"There are various forms of smarter working, including regular or occasional home working, various forms of flexible working, remote and mobile working," he continued.

Edmund King, AA president, added: "In transport terms home working cuts out the commute, reduces congestion and carbon emissions."

He went on to say that homeworkers can do a split shift which covers the busiest times on the road in the morning and evening peak times.

The news follows claims by conservation group Carbon Footprint earlier this week that green IT measures can be used to reduce the emissions made a company as a whole, as well as by IT technologies themselves.
