An industry commentator has highlighted the importance of websites as a cost-effective and time-efficient way for small businesses to increase sales.

John De Groot, managing director of business start-up company Startup Co, has said that websites are low investment growth opportunities containing the potential for a high return on that investment.

"The absolute key is the ability to generate enough traffic to the website to get the best sales end result," he added.

Mr De Groot went on to emphasise the importance of security, suggesting that staying with reputable IT outsourcing providers can reduce the risks of online crime.

"There is sufficient good practice for small businesses not to be deterred by the prospect of buying and selling online," he said.

Earlier this week, the Teleworking Association announced that working from home had "unique benefits" as it enabled employers to reduce office space requirements and operating costs and employees cold improve the balance between their work and home life.
