The IT outsourcing market in South Africa is on track to exceed $4 billion (£2 billion) this year.

Year-on-year growth is at 11 per cent, driven by economic expansion, increased availability of technology in rural areas and growth in the small and medium business market, writes Business Report.

The trends reflect research last week from BIW Technologies suggesting that IT outsourcing in London and the UK can expect to double its annual revenues to £2.5 billion by 2011.

Pieter Kok, a senior research analyst at IDC South Africa, told reporters: "Economic growth and national development projects are playing into the hands of IT services providers, in terms of hardware and software implementations, as well as custom development, outsourcing, and other services."

According to Business Report, IDC predicts that the South African IT outsourcing market will continue to grow at a rate of 11 per cent, to over $5.5 billion by 2011.
