There is room for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to make further inroads into the IT outsourcing industry, new research claims.

According to India Stocks, many SMEs are underserved by their IT providers.

The news provider states that major IT outsourcing companies in India receive such large workloads from their first-tier clients that they spend less time on lower-paying customers, and industry estimates are that less than 30 per cent of SMEs have so far made use of IT outsourcing.

Meanwhile, The Hindu Business Line reports that there is opportunity in the Indian IT outsourcing industry for SMEs to gain more of a foothold.

Krishnakumar Natarajan, president and chief executive of IT Services at MindTree Consulting, said: "Our clients are small and mid-sized banks. We also cater to the more 'under-catered' segments such as manufacturing, travel and transportation and hi-tech."

According to India Stocks, the small business IT outsourcing market is healthy, with scope for providers to work out the best ways to serve small and mid-size clients.
