IT outsourcing users investing in identity and access management (IAM) initiatives should ensure that the technology backs up their business goals, according to an expert.

Speaking at the Gartner Identity & Access Management Summit 2010, Jan de Blauwe, IT transversal guidance and services information security risk management at BNPP Fortis, suggested all investments should be made to drive the organisation forward.

Commenting on the rollout of IAM systems, he said: "Be very clear about the objectives. Make sure that you have your senior management on board, and not just in the IT organisation, but throughout the organisation."

Mr De Blauwe added that companies should make sure the reasons for the deployment of IAM are always based on business interest, not solely security.

Last week, Gartner predicted that revenues in the worldwide IAM market will grow by eight per cent in the next year, rising from $9.2 billion (£6.1 billion) in 2009 to $9.9 billion.
