Expert: PUE can help energy monitoring

Firms investing in power usage effectiveness (PUE) can find that monitoring their energy expenditure is far easier and costs are reduced in the long run, IT outsourcing users have learned.
Harkeeret Singh, vice-chair of the EMEA Technical Group for The Green Grid and head of energy optimisation at Thomson Reuters, said that the green agenda is becoming increasingly important to IT outsourcing users, who are looking to cut back on spending and lessen their impact on the environment.
His comments come after leaked plans that the government intends to consolidate its data centres into a small number of highly efficient ones, with costs savings expected to total £300 million per annum.
Mr Singh told IT outsourcing users that PUE is one way forward, as it is easy to use and tells managers the efficiency of an infrastructure and how to increase effectiveness.
"In terms of different facilities which you make, monitor and manage, potentially you'll focus investment in PUE. The metric is constrained by your location. You must work within it," the expert said.
