'Government must take on IT security role'
The government should implement a programme of technical legislation and information to tackle the problem of online security breaches, according to an industry expert.
Lord Erroll, spokesman for the House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee's report on personal internet security, admitted the issue is complex but suggested measures for combating cybercrime.
He continued: "There are rules and regulations to adhere to, but the IT professional is still unsure of their role or their requirements to ensure their company's compliancy."
"The government needs to take responsibility and put into place a serious provision of support and incentive guidelines, including technical information, for all UK businesses."
Lord Erroll went on to say that the future of internet security depends on governance and incentives rather than control.
This week, research carried out by technology consultancy Unysis Corporation suggested that the most successful technology companies are those that adopt the most innovative approaches to IT services management.
