SMEs can boost staff productivity levels and make their business more cost effective by having an internal social network, claimed one industry expert. Edward Saatchi, co-founder of NationalField, a fast-growing technology firm that specialises in business-based social networks, said firms should adopt a Facebook-style system for their employees to improve both communication and morale. He added: "It is a lot easier than email, it cuts down on meetings and in these tough economic times, it can really help people communicate a lot more easily and a lot more economically." NationalField found that its users in the UK on average benefited from a 43 per cent productivity increase because people spent less time searching numerous systems for information. Mr Saatchi's comments come just weeks after communications specialist Paul Gillan claimed that people and businesses are not using social networks to the full capabilities and that some businesses' CIOs were 'always five to ten years behind'.
