Microsoft tablet OS to be released in 2012

Microsoft is set to launch an operating system (OS) designed specifically for tablet devices in late 2012, it has been revealed.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek, the company will begin competing with Google and Apple in the tablet OS market in autumn next year.

But the news source notes this may be too late, because Google Android and Apple iOS could already be dominating the market by the end of 2012.

Gartner analyst Michael Gartenberg told Bloomberg: "If 2011 is the year of the tablet wars, Microsoft will be awfully late suiting up for that battle.

"It's not a good position to be in."

The new OS will be optimised for touch-screen devices and offer improved battery life.

Currently, Windows Phone 7 has a ten per cent market share, compared with 29 per cent for Android and 27 per cent for iOS.

Microsoft recently offered its Bing search engine functionality to a new green website that aims to raise money for charity while searching the web.
