Posted by Paul Sells A new government group has started work on the roll-out of next generation broadband across the UK, which may be good news for IT support users. Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) will manage the £1 billion Next Generation Fund and has been established to ensure the goal of delivering 2Mbps access to every household is met by 2012. Digital Britain minister Stephen Timms commented: "Taking advantage of new technologies like next generation broadband is vital to the growth of the UK's economy and it's important that all homes and businesses can access the opportunities faster speeds bring." Mr Timms also claimed that BDUK and the £1 billion fund will allow more communities to realise the advantages of super-fast internet and bridge the digital divide which exists between urban and rural areas. According to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, 90 per cent of the UK should have access to next generation broadband by 2017. Last month, telecommunications giant BT announced that it has created the one millionth hotspot in its Wi-Fi network. ![]() |
