Deduplication helping disaster recovery, poll finds
Posted by Paul Sells

New research has told IT outsourcing users that deduplication is one of the best ways to strengthen an enterprise disaster recovery plan.

A poll of almost 400 large businesses by data protection provider Sepaton found that 70 per cent rate improving disaster recovery protection as their most important IT task for the next year.

In addition, it revealed that data deduplication, virtual tape libraries and other disc-based solutions are likely to be the main focus of disaster recovery spending in 2010, as these methods increase protection while reducing the total cost of ownership.

Jay Kramer, vice president of worldwide marketing for Sepaton, commented: "Enterprise data managers are looking to implement technologies that help them meet the challenges of protecting enormous volumes of data, dealing with exponential data growth, delivering higher levels of service and meeting more stringent regulatory requirements."

Last month, IT industry analyst IDC claimed that more than 60 per cent of firms are either deduplicating their primary, backup and archive data or have plans to do so in the next 12 months.
