Written by Jessie Richards Data centre managers could see problems with energy, space and technology worsen during 2010, which may illustrate the need for IT outsourcing. Research from IT industry analyst Gartner claimed that the critical issues associated with effective data centre management will not ease over the next year and pointed out that firms will have to find practical ways of overcoming them. Rakesh Kumar, research vice president at Gartner, said: "Energy costs are the fastest-rising cost element in the data centre portfolio and yet data centre managers are still not paying sufficient attention to the process of measuring, monitoring and modelling energy use in data centres." The organisation also suggested that the best way for companies to reduce the costs of data centres is to remove hardware which is old or underutilised and move work over to systems that are able to do the tasks more effectively. Earlier this month, Ian Kilpatrick, chairman of IT security specialist Wick Hill, said that recent cases of data loss show the importance of companies investing in modern technologies to protect sensitive information. ![]() |
