Intel and Nokia will go beyond smartphones, expert claims

The collaboration between Intel and Nokia will create IT innovations beyond smartphones, an expert has claimed.

Kevin Burden, practice director of mobile devices at ABI Research, pointed out that the two companies have large research and development budgets.

Intel and Nokia announced last week that they will expanded their relationship to create a new mobile platform for net-generation smartphones, which will give users access to cutting-edge hardware, software and mobile internet services.

Mr Burden noted that Nokia has expressed a desire to move beyond mobile phone into new sectors in the IT market, while Intel has a heritage in creating new computing form factors, such as its X86 architecture processor.

Because of these factors, he claimed that "this collaboration will have a more significant impact on a device category beyond smartphones".

According to Nokia, the collaboration project will include use of several open source software initiatives to create new common technologies for future mobile computing devices.
