The IT security risks involved with making use of social media are not as great as many public service organisations believe, it has been claimed. Ewan McIntosh, a social media consultant speaking on behalf of the Society of Information Technology Management (Socitm) said such platforms allow people to communicate efficiently with those who work for local authorities. "Saying that there is no risk would be a little flippant on my part, but it would be to make the point that it's not half as much of a risk as public services generally think," he continued. Mr McIntosh went on to say in the past individuals who contacted their council by mail would be likely to complain, whereas social networking sites can allow people to talk to each other and find constructive solutions to challenges that they face in their life. A study carried out by Socitm earlier this month indicated 15 per cent of UK companies do not monitor social networking site use but frown upon employees catching up with friends in this way. ![]() |
