Firms looking to improve their environmental position and cut costs should consider server consolidation, it has been claimed. Research carried out by IT infrastructure specialist RichardsoNEyres indicates that organisations wishing to take their Green IT provision seriously should seek expert help. Adam Kemp , director of the firm, said organisations going for an informal approach to Green IT can lack structure in their environmental policies and this can affect the level of success they achieve in reducing energy costs and CO2 emissions. "While computers may drive efficiency, the data centres that run businesses are often far from efficient," he added. "They are at the heart of environmental challenges created by IT but the average retailer just does not have the necessary knowledge to bring about change." Last week, UK compliance specialist IT Governance claimed Green IT initiatives can promote better operating efficiencies and help organisations reduce operational cost and comply with environmental legislation. ![]() |
