Green IT provision is often misunderstood, despite its recent rise on the agenda of company executives, it has been claimed. Market researcher IDC states that the services are increasing in popularity and are set to impact the business world in the foreseeable future but the concept of 'green IT' means different things to different people, meaning vendors are approaching this market from a variety of angles. Amit Gupta, country manager for IDC New Zealand, said there has been very little information on how green IT is really being perceived by end-user organisations, despite the growing hype surrounding the provision. "Green IT is a global phenomenon, with enterprises seeking out IT suppliers whose products and solutions are more energy-efficient, more material-efficient, less hazardous, designed for greater recyclability and supported by end-of-life recycling programs," he added. This week, a spokesman for online information portal ComputerWeekly.com claimed virtualisation technology can allow managed IT support providers to cut IT emissions and save money in the process. ![]() |
