Remote email access should be used to help staff perform more effectively rather than work longer hours, according to telecommunications giant Vodafone.

Bryony Clow, mobile email expert at the firm, said many customers fail to make use of the technology because they are afraid it's going to eat into their social life and they are going to have to be contactable 24 hours a day.

"But, it's not so much about it eating into your social life; it's about using your time more wisely during the working day," she added.

Ms Clow went on to say four working days a month are wasted through not having mobile email and those days are made up of meetings and travelling between them.

The latest annual Bellwether survey of UK firms indicates competition for business is getting so tight that putting off dealing with a call or email for half an hour can cost a company thousands of pounds.
