A free service bringing email access to mobile phones has been launched in the UK.

The technology, developed by Blue Whale Systems, will be available on ordinary phones without users having to configure a new in-built email system.

As with Blackberrys, the software will allow all messages to be displayed as soon as they are received so customers do not have to manually connect to their inbox.

Richard Seward, founder and chief executive of the company, said that the service will allow people to have access to flexible mobile email without having to pay for a dedicated email advice.

"We're trying to make social networking – messaging, news feeds and status updates – as much a part of mobile life as text messaging," he added.

Earlier this week, the Internet Advertising Bureau claimed that email will continue to be the most popular form of online communication for some time.

Jack Wallington, programmes manager at the organisation, said that it is the only means of reciprocal communication on the web able to contact someone with an email address no matter what email software is used.
