Trojans are currently the most affective form of malware, according to a list composed by IT security firm BitDefender.

A pop-up serving trojan designed to sidestep blocker codes heads the table and eight feature in the top ten list.

In third place is a Trojan designed only to prevent BitDefender from updating its virus signature database, highlighting the current fashion of trying to avoid antivirus countermeasures.

Spokesman for the firm Sorin Dudea underlined the importance of maintaining comprehensive IT security measures.

"This just goes to show that it doesn't pay off to turn off your protection, not even for a little while," he added.

Earlier this week, security company CRYPTOCard claimed that small and medium business enterprises are not doing enough to tackle cyber-crime.

Jason Hart, senior vice-president at the company, said that many firms are vulnerable to basic attacks but can remedy this situation by putting in place simple security provisions.
