Businesses are increasingly being exposed to a wide variety of data loss risks associated with email and other communication streams, according to an outbound email security and data loss prevention survey carried out by an IT security provider.

The Proofpoint study found that 30 per cent of enterprises surveyed investigated an email leak of confidential information in the last year, with the same number admitting that their business was affected by the exposure of sensitive information.

A statement by the company said that email has emerged as the most important medium for communications inside and outside companies, but this has led to growing security risks.

"Email is not the only source of risk for information leakage, however. Respondents to the survey indicated significant risk resulting from employee use of blogs, message boards and media sharing sites as well as mobile devices," it added.

This week, communications agency Society Media claimed that internet marketing is important in terms of achieving immediate low-cost results for all types of companies and organisations.
