UK companies will have to harmonise their approaches to IT outsourcing in order to maximise their efficiency, according to a new study.

Research carried out by technology analyst Freeform Dynamics indicated that the more progressive organisations tended to act strategically in their adoption of IT outsourcing, making them better able to decide on what should be kept in house.

A statement from Freeform Dynamics said: "In this study we found a clear correlation between IT organisations that deliver services at a more strategic level to the business, and how businesses perceive their IT organisations.

"More importantly perhaps, there was also a correlation with stock market performance. It is a positive sign and adds considerable weight to the argument that IT can operate as more than just a cost centre."

Earlier this week, technology consultancy thinkbroadband, claimed that the most important advance so far in wireless technology is likely to be the introduction of a common data exchange method.
