Environmentally-friendly information technology (IT) services can help businesses to reduce their carbon emissions, according to an expert on green issues.

John Buckley, managing director at conservation group Carbon Footprint, said that allowing employees to work from home can lessen the environmental impact of a business, as emissions caused by the daily commute are reduced.

"IT is a great enabler to help reduce carbon emissions, and at the same time can reduce costs for the company in reductions in travel expenses and staff travel time," he added.

Mr Buckley went on to say that green IT measures can be used to reduce the emissions made a company as a whole, as well as by IT technologies themselves.

According to its December 2007 report entitled 'Inefficient Truth', Global Action Plan reported that there are now an estimated 10 million office PCs in the UK and 43 per cent of the British adult population regularly uses a computer at work.
