Business solutions giant IBM has introduced a number of risk management and IT security services aimed at medium-sized businesses.

Recent research has indicated an increase in the number of organised cybercrime attacks on smaller companies and it is hoped the technology will simplify IT operations to better prepare them for such situations, reports CNN Money.

The services could also help smaller organisations to comply more easily with the payment card industry standard, which helps any company handling credit card information to reduce security breaches.

David Ellis, director of e-security and professional services at Computerlinks, told the news provider: "As the need for protecting data and reducing the risk for our small to medium-sized customers continues to grow, being able to provide a service that specifically addresses their needs helps us to foster and maintain a stronger relationship with them."

Last week, Computer Weekly reported that the 2008 Information Security Breaches survey had found that 13 per cent of businesses had had a hacker breach their security systems in 2007 – a twelvefold increase from one per cent the previous year.
