In recent years, voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) has seen a dramatic increase in its usage, but companies should examine how they manage the technology, according to new research.

An Aberdeen Group report has found that while VoIP technology has developed to be able to provide advanced quality checks and security checks, many organisations are still ill-equipped to make the most of the technology, reports TMC.net.

Bojan Simic, research analyst at Aberdeen, said: "Organisations are investing more than a significant amount of resources in rolling out VoIP, and these investments have already enabled them to save 21 per cent in telecommunications costs."

He added however that any benefits gained could be lost if "the performance of VoIP solutions is not being properly managed."

The news follows reports in Computer Business Review this week that a new suite of telephony services designed expressly for small and medium-sized business enterprises has been developed by Magnet Business.
