A German company has developed a new mobile phone platform that will allow conventional mobile handsets to make low-cost voice over internet protocol (VoIP) via Wi-Fi.

If it is widely adopted, Infineon's XMM 1013 platform could represent a major step on the way towards technology convergence between Wi-Fi and mobile telephony.

The low-cost dual-mode GSM/Wi-Fi solution was demonstrated on Monday at the VON.x Conference and Expo in California.

Weng Kuan Tan, general manager and vice president of the entry phone business unit at Infineon's communication solutions business group, said: "While many people want to make inexpensive VoIP phone calls at home and on-the-go (or while travelling), there is a growing demand for easy-to-use handsets with accessibility to GSM mobile networks as well as Wi-Fi hotspots."

Full-scale production of the XMM 1013 platform will begin in the second quarter of this year. Infineon is currently sampling handsets with the system.

XMM 1013 is based on Infineon's X-GOLD101 single-chip and Atheros' single-chip AR6101 ROCm wireless VoIP solution.
