Experts have predicted the Ethernet market to prosper in the future despite competition from applications such as Sonet.

US-based Committed Information Rate (CIR) analysts have estimated the Ethernet market to be worth around $3.1 billion (£1.58 billion) by 2016 and that its technology will replace rivals such as Sonet, reports PC Welt.

Technological challenges mean high-speed 100G Ethernet will struggle comparatively and is predicted to be worth $1.2 billion by the same year, the article noted.

The analysts reportedly believe that mid-range Ethernet connections around 40Gbit a second will be more suitable for server and telecoms needs.

"Ethernet is being carried out with servers in mind…Servers will account for just over 40 percent of the 40/100 Gbit/s Ethernet market by 2016," the CIR analysts told the news provider.

"The new Ethernet standards will mark the end of the 'cold war' that has existed between the datacoms and telecoms industries since the 1980s," they added.

Next-generation internet connections will offer improved speeds but will probably only benefit Britons living in the large towns and cities for some years, Andrew Ferguson, editor of thinkbroadband.com, recently commented.
