Internet access through mobile phones offers many opportunities for businesses, say industry experts.

Business intelligence provider Informa Telecoms & Media claims that there is a huge amount of potential in business for this type of technology, which is particularly suited to internal communications.

Dan Winterbottom, principal analyst with Informa, said: "There's a huge [opportunity] for businesses to use mobile phones, whether it's just for email access or instant messaging, or some of the more advanced things like external access to intranets or sales force databases that you might have in the office.

"If you can cut down on the number of hours people are spending on the road or cut down on the number of miles a package has to move because you've been able to move things around using mobile mapping and navigations software, there are huge savings to be made."

In February last year Ofcom found that one in three UK adults own an internet enabled mobile phone and half of those had used it to go online.
