Second Life, one of the most popular alternative reality games on the internet, has reported that it has been hacked and stepped up security arrangements as a result.

Linden Lab, the creators of second life, announced that the hack was noticed on September 6th and it alerted members on September 8th.

The database that contains information on Second Life's 650,000 customers was the target of the hack. This information included customer names, addresses, phone numbers and encrypted credit card information.

Second Life issued advice to all customers detailing how they should change their password and all login details to prevent any possible account hacking.

Linden Lab stated: "While we realize this is an inconvenience for residents, we believe it's the safest course of action."

Second Life allows users to take on a completely separate existence on the web and do things that they wouldn't normally do in the real world.

However, crimes such as this surely provide a hefty does of reality to the cyber playground.
