Sony has confirmed that the Playstation 3 (PS3) has been delayed and will now not receive a European launch until after Christmas.

The machine will still be launched in the US and Japan by November, however, the amount of units to be dispatched has been lowered.

This news is sure to disappoint many gaming fans and it could affect Sony's success with the PS3 platform.

Microsoft will once again go into a Christmas peak period without a Sony challenger and an upsurge in sales for the Xbox 360 is expected.

Ray Maguire, senior vice president and managing director of Sony UK, stated: "We are extremely disappointed at news of this delay, and can truly empathise with everyone who was looking forward to PS3's imminent release.

"We will however be working tirelessly to ensure that the March 2007 launch is the biggest and best in the company's history."

Microsoft recently announced the impressive coup of having exclusive rights to the Fifa and Pro Evolution Soccer titles for the coming year.

Regarded within the industry as two of the largest gaming titles, the Xbox looks like having a successful end to 2006.
