Google has launched a scheme that warns users when they are about to enter an internet site that is known to harm computers or host spyware and various other malicious programs.

A warning message will pop up when a user enters a website that has been logged as being a harmful or dangerous URL; however if the user chooses to continue Google will not stop the connection being made.

Google is part of the Stop Badware Coalition led by Harvard university and the university of Oxford along with Sun Microsystems and Lenovo group. The non-profit group aims to make surfing the internet safer and allow users to access information without having their computers invaded with viruses.

The Stop Badware coalition stated: "Hopefully this next step will bring us that much closer to fulfilling our mission of providing people with reliable, objective information about downloadable applications in order to help them make better choices."

When users flag up a warning there is a link to the Stop Badware coalition detailing more about Badware including a detailed synopsis on a Trojan Horse, a Key logger and other assorted viruses.

In the future the coalition aims to put a more detailed and individual message up for each website which will include information on what that specific website contains and how it can harm a computer.

The coalition is good news for IT support in London, with the warnings helping to guide users around dangerous internet sites that can bring down whole networks of computers.
