Breaking news from ihotdesk, the home of IT support in London: IT outsourcing companies have been offered a helping hand from IBM in the form of new security software that will keep computer networks and systems up and running during security attacks.

IT outsourcing companies have been offered a helping hand from IBM in the form of new security software that will keep computer networks and systems up and running during security attacks.

Also benefiting corporate IT departments and telecom service providers, IBM Tivoli Security Operations Manager automatically detects and manages security threats as they take place.

This contrasts with the majority of security solutions that address security threats once the damage has already been done. IBM argues that this will be particularly useful in combating denial-of-service attacks, while it will also be valuable in highlighting insider attacks from former employees looking to steal sensitive company information.

The International Computer Science Institute has calculated that a single worm could potentially cause $50 billion of damage to organisations across the world and there is no doubt that IT support has been advancing at a staggering rate to alleviate some of these concerns.

IBM Tivoli Operations Manager will be making its own contribution to this process by integrating network, security, identity and systems management.

By prioritising security incidents, the software will reduce a company's response time from minutes to just milliseconds, which should also significantly reduce the amount of money spent dealing with security breaches.

As compliance initiatives continue to impact upon businesses, monitoring security controls in this manner is likely to become an increasingly central concern.
