The world of IT outsourcing has been given a welcome boost with news of an innovative software offering from IBM.

It will reportedly allow customers to virtualise their entire technology infrastructure and will track the use of computing assets across a variety of systems.

Businesses and IT outsourcing providers will also benefit from the fact that the software offers a means of billing individual clients for "the amount of computing they actually consume".

The Tivoli Usage and Accounting Manager can only work to the advantage of the rapidly developing trend of IT outsourcing across the world as it will offer both sides of the outsourcing arrangement the ability to accurately calculate costs.

Cost cutting is already seen as a central element of outsourcing and IT support in London and IBM's software has the potential to add greater transparency to the agreement.

Rich Lechner, vice president of virtualisation for IBM, suggested that the software will allow businesses to make more intelligent spending choices on the basis of usage patterns.
