Outsourcing e-marketing needs can prove "cheap and beneficial" for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), according to industry experts. The Direct Marketing Association (DMA), Europe's largest trade association in the marketing and communications sector, said that e-marketing had "enormous" potential but if companies failed to target potential customers suitably they could be breaking privacy laws. In December 2003 the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations came into effect, which prevents spamming (unsolicited email) or SMS marketing. Robert Dirskovski, head of interactive media at the DMA said that this e-marketing is something that an SME in particular "might be able to afford" as it is not a "great expense". "There are a great many companies now out there quite a lot in DMA's membership of course who will provide you with that service if you feel you need guidance," he added. Ofcom's annual communications market report this year found that consumers use the internet for 36 minutes per day on average in 2006, a 158 per cent increase from 2002, widening the audience that e-marketing could potentially reach. © Adfero Ltd |
