Outsourcing parts of your business requires a lot more work and organisation than most businesses think, according to IT expert Elaine Axby. With a number of British companies, such as Powergen, bringing their outsourcing home, Ms Axby says that there are a number of things to take into account before deciding to outsource your business. The first thing is to take your time with the project and do not rush it. Your home business must be in good shape to begin with and the outsourcing project must fit in with your overall business strategy, she explains. There must be clear dialogue between yourself and the outsourcing partner and the staff who are outsourced must be well trained and effective. It is also essential to think about the costs involved. Many see outsourcing as a way of cutting costs but businesses must take into consideration things like insurance. Some areas that you might have thought would be cheap to operate in, such as China, might be a nightmare to manage during the monsoon season. Writing for IT Director, Ms Axby points out that a good structure throughout and senior project managers who can appreciate both cultures is required, as well as ensuring that the outsourcing partner is aware of objectives and targets throughout. Outsourcing continues to be an effective way of conducting business and can reduce overhead costs, but Ms Axby warns that without careful planning and finding the right partner outsourcing can result in complaints and the work returning home. © Adfero Ltd |
